Today, the school standards minister said that the government would “not budge” on this year’s pay offer for teachers.Speaking at an event run by the NASUWT teachers’ union at the Conservative Party Conference, Jonathan Gullis said that the current offer of a 5 per cent rise for experienced teachers is “where that will stay”.

Mr Gullis also said he remained “committed” to offering teachers a salary of £30,000.
The minister stated his intention to hold regular discussions with teaching union leaders, which he said would be “meaningful talks”.
But Patrick Roach, general secretary of the NASUWT, said that the pay offer was “derisory” and would do nothing to address the “chronic crisis” in teacher recruitment and retention.
He called on the government to reconsider its position and to make a “substantial” pay offer that would help to attract more people into the profession.
The government has said it is willing to consider evidence that the pay offer is not enough to attract and retain teachers.
According to the most recent figures from the Department for Education, the number of applications to teacher training courses in England fell by 23 per cent in 2019.
The threats to strike action and the possibility of industrial action by teachers’ unions are likely to increase the pressure on the government to reconsider its position on pay.
The NEU teaching union opened voting to members in a preliminary ballot over strike action. In contrast, the NAHT school leaders’ union launched a consultation with members over their views on pay and funding.
Meanwhile, the NASUWT has previously said it is ”committed” to balloting its members on industrial action in the autumn term if an improved pay deal is not offered.
The union members will decide whether to take industrial action at their annual conferences in the coming weeks.
